I lovingly named my milestones sessions “Watch me Grow” because I feel that is exactly what you see after that first magical year. After that first year has passed, you get to look back and reflect in glorious nostalgia at how teeny-tiny your baby started, and more importantly, you get to see how far your baby’s development has come.
Ntando first contacted me in February of 2018 wanting to book Azania’s “Watch me Grow” session. I remember meeting Azania for the first time; she was so small, so innocent, so full of wonder, and an incredibly happy little baby. I mean, seriously, this baby was constantly smiling and always happy to be in studio!
Mommy Ntando wasn’t sure about a theme, she just knew she wanted to play with colors, I therefor suggested a hot air balloon theme. In short, it is little Azania in the exact same basket each month, with a new balloon added to her basket to represent her monthly age.
After the first Watch me Grow session, Ntando was over the moon with the concept. She enjoyed working with me, Azania loved being in front of the camera (maybe it’s my blue hair?), and a week after that first session, Ntando contacted me to cover little Azania’s Baptism.
We continued through the entire year, each month getting together to photograph Azania’s development, and each month I was filled with wonder at how much this gorgeous girl has grown. Throughout the year I learned more and more about Ntando too, how she is a proud Zulu woman, with strong Catholic morals and values, teaching her baby girl about the joys of nature.
A full year had passed, and it was time to celebrate our baby girl becoming a full-fledged toddler. Yep, it was time for Azania’s cake smash and splash session.
Ntando wanted to celebrate Azania’s birth into the world by incorporating their beautiful and colorful Zulu heritage. And can I just say, LOVE! I loved the set we came up with, and with the help and guidance from Ntando into Zulu culture we created something unique and chock full of meaning and symbolism to suit their life story.
Another month had passed, so we finished off our year long journey with a lovely mommy-and-me lifestyle portrait session right in Ntando and Azania’s back yard, reading books picnic style, and wandering about as Ntando showed Azania all the different types of fruit trees and the fruits they bare.
It was an amazing year of discovery, and I for one am so grateful for bearing witness to the wonder which was Azania’s first year.
Ntando and Azania received one of our beautiful StoryKeeper photo books to allow them to look back at this very special time of their life’s journey.
Each StoryKeeper book is unique, because each family is unique. Take a look at the video below to see what the StoryKeeper is all about…
